{"1983-beirut-barracks-bombings":{"extract":"On October 23, 1983, two truck bombs were detonated at buildings in Beirut, Lebanon, housing American and French service members of the Multinational Force in Lebanon (MNF), a military peacekeeping operation during the Lebanese Civil War. The attack killed 307 people: 241 U.S. and 58 French military personnel, six civilians and two of the attackers.\n\nEarly that Sunday morning, the first suicide bomber detonated a truck bomb at the building serving as a barracks for the 1st Battalion 8th Marines (Battalion Landing Team – BLT 1/8) of the 2nd Marine Division, killing 220 Marines, 18 sailors and three soldiers, making this incident the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II and the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States Armed Forces since the first day of the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War. Another 128 Americans were wounded in the blast. Thirteen later died of their injuries, and they are counted among the number who died. An elderly Lebanese man, a custodian/vendor who was known to work and sleep in his concession stand next to the building, was also killed in the first blast. The explosives used were later estimated to be equivalent to as much as 12,000 pounds (5,400 kg) of TNT.\n\nMinutes later, a second suicide bomber struck the nine-story Drakkar building, a few kilometers away, where the French contingent was stationed. Fifty-five paratroopers from the 1st Parachute Chasseur Regiment and three paratroopers of the 9th Parachute Chasseur Regiment were killed and 15 injured. It was the single worst French military loss since the end of the Algerian War. The wife and four children of a Lebanese janitor at the French building were also killed, and more than twenty other Lebanese civilians were injured.\n\nA group called Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the bombings and said that the aim was to force the MNF out of Lebanon. According to Caspar Weinberger, then United States secretary of defense, there is no knowledge of who did the bombing. Some analysis highlights the role of Hezbollah and Iran, calling it \"an Iranian operation from top to bottom\". There is no consensus on whether Hezbollah existed at the time of bombing. The attacks eventually led to the withdrawal of the international peacekeeping force from Lebanon, where they had been stationed following the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) withdrawal in the aftermath of Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon.","extract_retrieved_at":"2026-09-26","wikipedia_revid":1376811260,"wikipedia_revid_timestamp":"2026-09-26T10:17:17Z","wikipedia_url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Beirut_barracks_bombings","wikidata_qid":"Q518303","wikidata_classes":["suicide attack","suicide car bombing","vehicle-ramming attack","terrorist attack","mass murder"],"date_flags":[],"wikipedia_lead_dates":[],"coordinate_source":"wikipedia","text_from_article":null,"hand_picked":true,"date_precision":"day","framing_review":{"fairness":{"found":false,"note":null,"highlights":[]},"wording":{"found":false,"findings":[],"highlights":[]},"highlights":[],"category_note":null,"data_note":null,"disclosure":null,"reviewed_on":"2026-09-30","stale":false},"part_of":[{"qid":"Q208484","label":"Lebanese Civil War","id":"lebanese-civil-war"}],"related":{"shared_parent":[{"id":"1983-us-embassy-bombing-in-beirut","title":"1983 US embassy bombing in Beirut","date_start":"1983-04-18"},{"id":"sabra-and-shatila-massacre","title":"Sabra and Shatila massacre","date_start":"1982-09-16"},{"id":"1982-lebanon-war","title":"1982 Lebanon War","date_start":"1982-06-06"},{"id":"tel-al-zaatar-massacre","title":"Tel al-Zaatar massacre","date_start":"1976-08-12"},{"id":"damour-massacre","title":"Damour massacre","date_start":"1976-01-20"}],"nearby":[{"id":"2015-beirut-bombings","title":"2015 Beirut bombings","date_start":"2015-11-12","km":2.3,"bearing":20},{"id":"2024-hezbollah-headquarters-strike","title":"2024 Hezbollah headquarters strike","date_start":"2024-09-27","km":2.6,"bearing":19},{"id":"assassination-of-saleh-al-arouri","title":"Assassination of Saleh al-Arouri","date_start":"2024-01-02","km":3.6,"bearing":30},{"id":"2021-beirut-clashes","title":"2021 Beirut clashes","date_start":"2021-10-14","km":5,"bearing":21},{"id":"battle-of-beirut-1912","title":"Battle of Beirut (1912)","date_start":"1912-02-24","km":6.6,"bearing":15}],"same_time":[{"id":"gulf-air-flight-771","title":"Gulf Air Flight 771","date_start":"1983-09-23"},{"id":"may-17-agreement","title":"May 17 Agreement","date_start":"1983-05-17"}]}},"sheikh-said-rebellion":{"extract":"The Sheikh Said rebellion (Kurdish: Serhildana Şêx Seîd; Turkish: Şeyh Said İsyanı) was a Kurdish nationalist and Islamist rebellion in Southeast Anatolia from February to March 1925 led by Sheikh Said and with support of the Azadî movement and local religious and feudal leaders against the newly-founded secular Republic of Turkey. The result was a landslide victory for Bashar al-Assad, who received over 90% of the valid votes. He was sworn in for a third seven-year term on 16 July in the presidential palace in Damascus. There is scholarly consensus that the elections were not democratic.\n\nThe elections took place amidst the Syrian civil war, which had begun three years before. As a result of the war, the country had the largest refugee population in the world at the time of the elections, with voting for refugees in certain foreign countries began at Syrian embassies several days before voting in Syria. Domestic and foreign-based Syrian opposition groups boycotted the election and voting did not take place in large parts of Syria under rebel control. The areas under Kurdish militia control also did not allow voting due to the refusal of the government to recognize their claim for regional autonomy, though some people traveled to government–controlled areas to vote.\n\nThe Gulf Cooperation Council, the European Union and the United States decried the election as illegitimate. Attempts to hold an election under the circumstances of a civil war were also criticized by UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon and it was widely reported that the elections lacked independent election monitoring.","extract_retrieved_at":"2026-10-06","wikipedia_revid":1369200663,"wikipedia_revid_timestamp":"2026-08-13T13:09:38Z","wikipedia_url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Syrian_presidential_election","wikidata_qid":"Q16335811","wikidata_classes":["presidential election","public election"],"date_flags":[],"wikipedia_lead_dates":[],"coordinate_source":null,"text_from_article":null,"date_precision":"day","framing_review":{"fairness":{"found":false,"note":null,"highlights":[]},"wording":{"found":false,"findings":[],"highlights":[]},"highlights":[],"category_note":null,"data_note":null,"disclosure":null,"reviewed_on":"2026-09-30","stale":false},"related":{"same_time":[{"id":"fall-of-mosul","title":"Fall of Mosul","date_start":"2014-06-04"},{"id":"2014-egyptian-presidential-election","title":"2014 Egyptian presidential election","date_start":"2014-05-28"},{"id":"2014-israeli-presidential-election","title":"2014 Israeli presidential election","date_start":"2014-06-10"},{"id":"2014-kidnapping-and-murders-of-israeli-teenagers","title":"2014 kidnapping and murders of Israeli teenagers","date_start":"2014-06-12"},{"id":"camp-speicher-massacre","title":"Camp Speicher massacre","date_start":"2014-06-12"}]}},"2016-saudi-arabia-bombings":{"extract":"On 4 July 2016, four suicide bombs exploded in three locations in Saudi Arabia.
